MOOCs

In fall 2013, Columbia University partnered with Coursera to offer Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) with the aim to contribute knowledge to the world, enhance teaching on campus by better leveraging technology and media, and showcase the university’s programs and faculty. In Spring 2013, the University offered its first three MOOCs on Coursera from The Fu Foundation School of Engineering and Applied Science. Following the success of the first courses, the University has continued to offer MOOCs taught by world renowned faculty from Arts & Sciences, the Medical School, and university affiliates Barnard and Teachers College.

In March 2014, Columbia University partnered with edX, and Provost John Coatsworth shared plans to “offer courses in fields ranging from the humanities to the sciences.” Eric Foner, the Pulitzer-Prize-winning DeWitt Clinton Professor of History at Columbia University, taught the first course on edX on the Civil War and Reconstruction. Known as ColumbiaX on edX, offerings range from MicroMasters, XSeries, Professional Certificates, and individual courses on a variety of subjects taught by top instructors at the University.
