Columbia Engineering has launched its first boot camp in financial technology, the most recent in a series of boot camps offered in partnership with Trilogy Education Services. The Columbia Engineering FinTech Boot Camp is designed to prepare learners with the technical and analytical skills necessary to fill the growing needs of companies in the financial sector.

“Financial services companies are in need of data and technology experts to help support the growth and innovation occurring in the sector,” said Professor Soulaymane Kachani, Vice Provost for Teaching, Learning, and Innovation at Columbia University. “The Columbia Engineering FinTech Boot Camp provides learners with the applied skills that will open the door to a range of fintech roles, from transforming their business’ technology capabilities to launching their own fintech startups.”

Over the past eight years, over 1.5 million fintech-related jobs were added nationwide, and in the past year banks, such as U.S. Bancorp and JP Morgan Chase, have had more open coding positions than Apple and Google. New York City is ranked the #1 tech city in the world by Savills, and the finance sector accounts for 30% of earnings in the city. In the last 12 months, the NYC metropolitan area had over 240,000 job openings requiring the data and technology skills that are taught in the Columbia Engineering FinTech Boot Camp.

The FinTech Boot Camp’s curriculum is designed to give learners the knowledge that they need to move forward in the financial technology industry, as well as experience applying this knowledge to real-world problems. At the end of the boot camp, learners will have a strong portfolio and experience with a wide range of technologies, including:

  • Analyzing stock movement using financial APIs in Jupyter notebooks
  • Creating predictive models for stock prices with time series analysis using Python
  • Building a decentralized identity system using blockchain technologies
  • Applying machine learning algorithms to analyze sentiment scores for cryptocurrency news
  • Using TensorFlow and Keras to build deep learning neural networks to predict financial outcomes
  • Developing an AI-driven robo-advisor capable of providing financial services with minimal human intervention

The Columbia Engineering Coding Boot Camp was the first boot camp launched in partnership with Trilogy Education Services in June 2018. Columbia Engineering now offers boot camps in coding, data analytics, cybersecurity, and fintech.

In addition to classroom instruction and outside projects, boot camp participants receive career planning services, access to employer networking events, and opportunities to showcase their professional project portfolio to local employers and recruiters.

The 24-week, part-time fintech boot camp launched its first cohort on August 20th, 2019, with another one beginning on December 9th, 2019. For more information on this and other Columbia Engineering Boot Camps, visit bootcamp.cvn.columbia.edu, or call 646-870-1598 to speak to an admissions officer.
